A sixth attorney has joined a crowded field of candidates to replace a retiring Butte judge.

Samm Cox of the Butte-Silver Bow County Attorney's Office filed on Monday to become the sixth candidate in the race. Monday was the deadline to file with the Montana Secretary of State's Office.

The Montana Standard reports that Cox has worked for the county attorney's office since graduating law school in 1995, and he has been the county's chief prosecutor since 2008.

Butte attorneys Wayne Harper, Robert "Bob" Whelan, Timothy “Tim” Dick and Cindy Walker previously filed to run for the seat.

The Honorable Brad Newman announced in January that he is not seeking a third term.

In total, there are 37 state district court judge races on Montana ballots this year. Six of those races will be contested
